December 9, 2010
-- USA Swimming is pleased to announce that Acxiom Information Security Services, headquartered in
Cleveland, OH, has been selected as the organization’s new background check provider. Acxiom, a pioneer
in the industry, is one of the largest providers of background screening services in the USA. Led
by nationally-recognized background screening expert Nadell Investigation Services, USA Swimming conducted
an extensive selection process receiving proposals from 20 industry providers.
Based on new rules established at the U.S. Aquatic Sports Convention in September, all non-athlete
members are required to complete a USA Swimming background check (BGC). The new program will provide
two levels of screening. Coaches and Officials are required to complete a Level 2 BGC while all other
non-athlete members must complete the Level 1 BGC.
The Level 2 Background Check will cost approximately $37-$40 while the Level 1 Check will cost
between $17-$20. The initial check for both levels is valid for two years. Prior to the end
of the 24th month following the initial check, all non-athlete members (regardless of membership type - coach,
official, other) will be required to complete a Renewal background check that will also cost $17-20. The
Renewal check must be updated every two years in order to maintain a non-athlete membership in USA Swimming.
At the time the legislation was approved, the deadline for meeting the new requirement was December 31,
2010. With the selection of a provider taking longer than anticipated, the USA Swimming Board of
Directors has created new implementation deadlines as outlined below.
Non-Athlete Members - No Previous BGC: All non-athlete members who have not previously completed
the USA Swimming background check must successfully complete the new background check program by February 15, 2011.
Non-Athlete Members with Previous BGC prior to Sept 1, 2010: All non-athlete members who have
previously completed the USA Swimming background check before September 1, 2010, are required to complete
the new BGC prior to April 30, 2011. This group includes anyone with current checks as well as
anyone whose previous background check may have expired since September 30, 2010. The renewal
deadline for these individuals has been extended until April 30, 2011. For example, a coach who
had a background screen expire on October 31 now has until April 30 to complete the new BGC.
Non-Athlete Members with BGC between Sept 1, 2010 - Dec 31, 2010: Finally, any non-athlete
members who have completed the USA-S background check since September 1, 2010 are required to complete
the new background check prior to December 31, 2011.
Over the next few weeks, USA Swimming will be sharing additional details about the new program as well
as directions for initiating the new background check. In the interim, if you have questions about
the new background check program please contact backgroundcheck@usaswimming.org
or Central Zone Sport Development Consultant, Randy Julian, rjulian@usaswimming.org.

-- Wisconsin swimmers Emily Schwabe, Matt Friede and Aja Van Hout participated in the
NCSA Junior Team Trip to Ireland. Here are reports from Emily, Matt and Aja along with some photos.
Going to Ireland was a great experience. I had the opportunity to swim
alongside the best swimmers in the country and represent my country. The entire meet
environment was very intense and everyone was excited to swim. Meeting the younger
Irish kids was really neat too. I never anticipated that they would idolize America
so much. They wanted anything and everything we had that had red, white and
blue. After the meet we got to tour the countryside and Dublin. The rolling hills
were beautiful and the city was very classic . It was an experience I will never
forget and I am happy to have had this opportunity.

My dream of swimming at an international meet became a reality last spring. I
was thrilled to be selected as a member of the NCSA All Star Team to compete at the Irish
Long Course National meet. Making new friends and meeting coaches from all over the
United States was a great experience. I have made new friendships for life! Wearing
the USA cap was such an honor. Our team was so much fun and energetic with spirit and
competitiveness. The Irish people were so welcoming and kind. They hosted an
awesome meet in a beautiful facility. I am very thankful that my love for swimming has
opened up so many doors for me. This trip is certainly one of my fondest memories ever!
With sincere appreciation to Wisconsin Swimming,
--Aja Van Hout

I will forever remember the Ireland trip as the best experience I have ever
had. Not only was I in a beautiful country, I was surrounded by some of the best and elite
coaches and swimmer in the US. I formed a bond with the swimmers that will never be lost,
it was awesome to be surrounded by kids that have the same passion and life goals as I
do. The coaches were so helpful, gave me great tips and taught us a lot about team unity
and dedication. Everybody had great attitudes at the meet, although a lot of us were not
rested, everybody kept positive and put in their all. The Irish kids cracked me up,
on the first day of the meet I walked past a group of Irish kids and in conversation
with a fellow teammate I said "OH MY GOD!" and found my american accent being mocked
by a little irish boy immediately after I said it. The Irish kids were very interested
in our lives and our background, and wanted to get their hands on anything red, white
and blue, at any price. I had no idea we were going to be such celebrities! After the
meet we got to tour the hills and the city of Ireland, being able to explore a different
country was mind blowing. Having international experience under my belt has made me a
better swimmer and has greatly benefited my swimming career. There is not one day that I
take that trip for granted, I was very lucky to be a part of it.

-- The following is from Melanie Winter at Lacrosse YMCA Swim Team
Dear friends,
Terry Brenner has asked me to pass on the news that Coach Jon has passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning. As funeral arrangements are pending, we will let you know the details when we know more. Terry wanted to let everyone know that they are currently in good hands with their family and close friends. She is looking forward to remembering Jon with everyone during the memorial service.
Please join me in praying for strength and peace for the Brenner family at this time. I will try to keep you posted as more becomes known. Please contact me if you have questions.
On behalf of the Wave Swim Team, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of the support that you have shown to our Coach (and to us) during his brave bout with cancer. We appreciate it more than we can say and it is so comforting to have such a great group to lean on for support.
