December 26 2001 -- Attention Officials.  Please consider volunteering to work at the 2002 Wisconsin 12 & Under State Championship to be held March 1-3 at the UW Natatorium. The more clubs represented on deck enhances the meet’s quality. If interested please call or email Rich Hubbard (608-836-5663 or hubbard1@chorus.net) to indicate your session preference.
December 21 2001 -- The Open Water Committee of USA Swimming has published it's first email newsletter. Click Here to read it.
December 19 2001 -- Schroeder YMCA Swim Team athletes Sara Petric and Garrett Weber-Gale both qualified for the USA National Swimming Championships to be held in Minneapolis, MN, March 19 – 23, 2002.  Petric, 17, from Mequon, WI and Weber-Gale, 16 of Foxpoint, WI, were two of thirteen swimmers representing the Schroeder YMCA at the Kerr-McGee Corporation Elite Meet in Oklahoma City, OK, December 13-16.

Petric, a sprint freestyle specialist, recently won two events at the Wisconsin State High School Championships for Homestead High School and signed a national letter of intent with Northwestern University.  Petric’s time of 23.34 in the 50 yard freestyle was well below the qualifying standard for the United States National Swimming Championships.  Weber-Gale, a Junior at Nicolet High School, is the defending WIAA champion in the 100 yard backstroke.  Weber-Gale’s time of 49.89 is just .01 off the Wisconsin State record set by 2000 Olympian, Neil Walker of Verona, WI.

November 12 2001 -- In an effort to help teams select meet dates and avoid conflicts, Wisconsin Swimming has started a Long Range Meet Calendar.  This is a place to post meet dates before the actual meet schedules are finalized in January and June.  As you reserve your facilities for meets, send an email to the webmaster, and we will post your dates.  Check the schedule to see what other teams are doing on the dates you are considering.  If enough teams participate, it should help even out the meet schedule and prevent weekends with too many sparsely attended meets.  LAKE has started us off with their meet schedule for the next long course and short course seasons.  Please include the following information when you email:

November 2 2001 -- The Zone Sectional Spring 2002 Meet (Speedo Champions Series) information is now available. If you picked up time standards at the LSC meeting, note the change in 11-12 Girls 50 Back SCM and 50 Breast LCM times.  Both times should end with the digit "9".
October 26 2001 -- At the USA Swimming Convention, September 11-16, 2001, The Rules & Regulations committee adopted technical rule changes previously passed by FINA.  Most significant was the change in the backstroke finish to allow the swimmer to be submerged at the touch.  The complete text of the changes are HERE in PDF format. These rule changes take effect immediately.  Complete minutes from the Convention, including all legislation is available on the Wisconsin Swimming Meetings Page.

Also, at the convention, a change to the facilities standard was made to require a 5 foot minimum depth for teaching racing starts.  This does not apply to competition, but any setting where starts are taught.  The text of the change is HERE. This rule change takes effect November 1.

July 24, 2001 -- A new virus (actually a worm) has been making the rounds of swim teams in Wisconsin. It is called W32.sircom.worm. When it infects a computer it sends out email under that user's name with an attachment that looks like a real file, but is the worm instead. The body of the email looks like this:
Hi! How are you?
I send you this file in order to have your advice
See you later. Thanks
This is just a reminder of some rules for safe computing:
  1. If you don't have virus protection, get it! Good names are Norton Anivirus from Symantec , and McAfee VirusScan from Networks Associates .
  2. Update your virus software regularly (this worm was only recently discovered).
  3. Don't open attachments you aren't expecting.
  4. Look carefully at attachments. If they have endings like .PIF, .COM, .EXE, .VBS, be suspicious. Don't open them!
  5. Finally, not all virus warnings are true. If someone sends you an email with a virus warning and says to send it to everyone you know, DON'T. Check out the virus yourself at one of the two virus sites above. They both have extensive libraries of real viruses and of hoaxes.

February 15, 2001 -- At the January 23 LSC meeting, legislation was passed to require all teams participating in this year's Summer State meet to provide timers in proportion to the number of individual entries submitted to last year's Long Course meet. Every team participating is required to staff at least one lane for one session. Each lane requires two timers.  Teams may reserve any combination of sessions to satisfy their requirement.  Use this form to reserve your lane assignment.  Sessions will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis from reservations received postmarked on or after March 13 - just like meet reservations.

The rationale is this: No team had bid the state meet as of the LSC meeting, so VAC and MAST joined forces to co-host the meet, but were unable to staff the timer positions.  The alternative would have been the LSC running the meet in which case all teams would have had to supply timers.

The Event Schedule for the Summer State Meet is expected to be the same as last year.  Click Here for the 2000 Long Course State Meet Event List.  Remember that the 2001 dates are August 2-5.

February 7, 2001 -- The FAST Pentathlon meet scheduled for June 16 is NOT a single session.  It should be listed as: AM:8&U,10&U; PM:11-12,13-14,15&O.  The document links below have been updated.
February 1, 2001 -- The MCC Swimming and Diving Championships is scheduled to be hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers at the Shroeder YMCA and Aquatic Center Wednesday, February, 21 through Saturday, February 24, 2001. This is a great opportunity for parents and athletes to see that there are more options than just the big 10 and comparable conferences.  Anyone who would like to volunteer to time on either Thurs, either session, Fri Prelims, or Saturday (both sessions) should email Bruce Maas at bmaas@uwm.edu or call during the day at 414-229-2834 or in the evening at 414-332-9843.  Free admission heat sheets for timers.  See the UWM Panthers website for information.
February 1, 2001 -- From Denny Pursley, National Team Director, USA Swimming:

Please note the following rules about body suits.

FINA rule GR 6.4 states: "Before any swimsuit of new design (i.e. body suits), construction or material is used in competition, the manufacturer of such swimsuit must submit the swimsuit to FINA and obtain approval of FINA".

As of today, ONLY the following have been approved by FINA: Adidas, Arena, Speedo, Tyr.  Other brands cannot be worn until they are in compliance with the above rule.

Direct all comments or questions to Denny Pursley at dpursley@usa-swimming.org.
