Wisconsin Swimming, Inc., Board of Directors
Meeting Minutes: June 26, 2001
University of Wisconsin Center, Waukesha, Wisconsin

MEMBERS PRESENT: Carol Graham, Patty Kramer, Cathi Marty, Jim Mohr, Mary Schneider, Barb Stirn, Dave Westphal, Susan Zblewski

CALL TO ORDER: Mohr, General Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:00 PM.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the April 24, 2001 meeting were approved by consensus. Kramer moved and Schneider seconded accepting the minutes of January 23, 2001 meeting. Motion approved.

2001 TEAM WISCONSIN UPDATE: Kramer, Team Manager, reported that arrangements for lodging were complete with the Holiday Inn Select, Auburns Hills, Michigan, the hotel closest to the Oakland University Aquatic Center and the site of the 2001 Central Zone Long Course Championship Meet. Swimmers would be assigned four swimmers to a room with two double beds whenever possible; chaperones and coaches, two persons to a room with two double beds. Transportation with Riteway Motorcoach Division was pending decisions the number and of type of coaches needed. Such decisions could not be made until Registration occurred at the LSC Long Course Championships, August 3rd- 5th. Riteway was being very accommodating. Food arrangements were pending with Oakland University. She was recruiting staff for the Registration Table. A 2001 Team Wisconsin budget and "computation of fees," prepared by Schneider, LSC Treasurer, and herself, were distributed. The fees are:

Pool/Individual Events
Swimmer Travels with Team $412
Swimmer Travels on Own $159

Open Water Events
Swimmer Travel with Team $ 82*
Swimmer Travels on Own $ 16*

*An Open Water swimmer also must pay either the "Travel with Team" or Travel on Own" fee.

Dave Anderson, Matt Miller, and Dave Joyce now present.

Anderson moved and Walden seconded adjusting the Team Wisconsin fees to reflect the LSC financial support of $100 per swimmer. Motion passed. Thus, the amount to register for the pool/individual events would be $312 or $59.

Since a swimmer is eligible for $100 LSC financial support for competing in either the Central Zone Age Group Meet or the Central Zone Sectional Speedo Championship Meet, Kramer will provide Schneider with a list of 2001 Team Wisconsin members competing in the Central Zone Age Group Meet so Schneider can reimburse other swimmers appropriately.

The Age group Committee interprets the LSC policy on reimbursement for the 2001 summer Central Zones Sectional Speedo Championship to include $100 reimbursement for "relay only" swimmers, since the policy reads reimbursing the athlete without any distinction between swimmers competing in individual events and swimmers competing only in relay events.

DISTANCE EVENTS: USA Swimming recommends including longer distance events for younger swimmers in LSC Championships, i.e., 400m/500y freestyle for swimmers 10 years and younger and 1500m/1650y freestyle for swimmers ages 11-12 years. Walden stated that the Age Group Committee was beginning to integrate these events into the LSC Championship format. Initially, the qualifying times for the Central Zone Open Water Championships were "A" times in these events, as they are the longest events for these age groups. However, because Wisconsin and some other LSCs had not incorporated these events into their Meets, including their Championship Meets, the Central Zone Open Water qualifying times were revised as "A" times for the 200 freestyle for swimmers ages 10 years and younger and the 400/500 for swimmers 11-12 years old.

WILSON PARK POOL: Anderson reported that continued Club use of this pool was in jeopardy because Milwaukee County was considering converting it to a recreational pool with a zero depth entry.

USA SWIMMING’S STAR SYSTEM: Mohr reported that a new tracking system, that will be available on the web, will permit sorting data by gender, age, and event to identify the top 100 times to enable a swimmer to compare himself/herself to other swimmers. The system requires the LSC OVC-Records Chairperson or other person to send USA Swimming a disk of top times from Meets. Mohr referred the topic to Technical Planning for review and a recommendation on Wisconsin’s participating in such a program.

OUTREACH MEMBERSHIP: Anderson reported on a special USA Swimming membership program for swimmers from low-income families with a reduced annual fee of $5 (instead of $25), if the LSC also will reduce its swimmer fee from $3 to $2. Proof of family income level and the number of family members are required. Anderson estimated that the Schroeder YMCA Swim Team could have 50 outreach memberships. Graham said the USA Swimming reported a total of 694 outreach memberships to date. Anderson will convene a committee, including Marty, Graham, and Eleanor Fennie to draft a program for Wisconsin Swimming. The Board approved having its Executive Committee review and approve such program. To become effective with the start of the 2002 USA Swimming membership year, September 1st, the proposal must be approved by August 1st.

ADJOURNMENT: 7:15 PM by movement of feet.
